Muon1 Distributed Particle Accelerator
Design Project reaches 40 Quadrillion Milestone

The Muon1 Distributed Particle Accelerator Design Project proudly announces that today, at 01:23:23 UTC, it reached the 40 quadrillion (40,000,000,000,000,000) particle timesteps (pts) milestone.

The Muon1 project attempts to assist in the design of the most efficient particle accelerator to form part of the Neutrino Factory project using the spare computing power available while volunteers' PCs are idle. It is run semi-independently by Rutherford Appleton Laboratory's Stephen Brooks on a shoestring budget.

The project works in a very different way to traditional distributed computing clients, as it does not use a standard work-unit allocation system to brute-force the task. Instead of a central server assigning blocks of work to users which are crunched and returned, clients start off with random designs, which are are then modified in an attempt to improve things. Results are returned to the servers with the best designs available to clients to incorporate into their future designs.

“While brute force systems are very efficient at dealing with small (1015 permutations) projects,” explains project head Stephen Brooks, “each of our design ranges are incredibly vast, with between 10300 and 101200 possible design points. It's just not possible to work in that way.”

Genetic algorithms allow for extremely rapid progress in design work, as designs with potential are examined closely, while designs that don't perform as required are given a basic investigation and stored for later use, significantly reducing the amount of processing time wasted on unproductive designs. In some tasks, it has already been found to increase yield efficiency three-fold over the best designs traditional methods have devised.

“Muon1's optimiser continues to be a flexible tool for designing many kinds of accelerator beamline.” says Brooks, “It is regularly producing good designs for the neutrino factory front end and we're also using the data gathered to improve the algorithm further. It is also producing excellent results when tried on completely different accelerator design problems, which may be rolled out to the distributed network over the coming years.”

The flexible design process also means that as new theories or hypothesis are made or published the field, the project can be returning results within as little as six hours. This enables the project to stay at the cutting edge with minimal modifications.

There is also the ability for end-users to manually enter designs to be simulated with no physics knowledge needed, allowing people at any level of expertise to positively interact with the client.

Muon1 has won acclaim for its accurate and colourful 3D visual mode, which allows the viewpoint to be manipulated at will and has supported stereoscopic 3D viewing (via Anaglyphic red-blue glasses) for many years. The client can be run in visual, command-line, hidden, and screensaver modes. Alternatively it can be run though the BOINC client, as part of the Yoyo@home project.

Muon1 is a Windows-based distributed computing project that was started in 2001. Initially simulating 2500 particles, with a handful of people, now thousands of computers run the client simulating tens of thousands of particles at a time. Simulations work using 0.01 nanosecond increments (a 'timestep'), which define the project's workload measure - particle-timesteps, or pts. An internet connection is preferred, but not required to participate. The client requires no integration with Windows, and can be run from a portable drive, and switched between computers as required.

The aim of the project is to design the central section of a particle accelerator which will be used to determine the masses of different types of Neutrinos. Currently, their properties are largely unknown, with recent questions about their velocity.
The average size of a simulation run is 400 million particle timesteps, and will take between 15 and 90 minutes for a typical modern multi-core computer, depending on hardware.
About Stephen Brooks

Stephen Brooks, 29, is a research associate with the UK Neutrino Factory project, based at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL) in Oxfordshire. He studied mathematics, computation and mathematical physics first at the Open University and then at Oxford, graduating in 2001 and 2003, respectively. Research interests centre around the application of numerical analysis methods to scientific and engineering problems, currently in particular the simulation of particle beams in accelerators.

Notes for Editors

40 quadrillion (or million-billion) particle timesteps is the equivalent of simulating a single particle for 111 hours, 6 minutes .

In the simulation, approximately 3 millimetres (3/32 of an inch) is travelled every timestep (0.01 nanoseconds) by the particles, which have near light-speed velocity.

After 40 quadrillion timesteps, that particle would have travelled about 120,000,000,000km (74,560,000,000 miles), or roughly 802 Astronomical Units (1AU is the distance from the Earth to the Sun). For comparison, Voyager 1, the most distant man-made object, is 123.4AU from the Sun.

Past milestones were 20 Quadrillion on July 16 2010, 25 Quadrillion on June 10 2011, and 30 Quadrillion on December 29 2011; a doubling of the work done in the last 2.5 years.

40 Quadrillion timesteps is roughly 1 timestep for every 11 seconds the universe has been in existence.

A little late, but I thought I’d bring you the breakdown of results for Muon1 through 2012. Better late than never though, so here are the highs and lows of 2012 for the Muon1 Distributed Particle Accelerator Project.

To start with, let’s start with the stats. The weekly stats continue to be published every Tuesday, and the start and end points this year for this piece are 3 January 2012 to 1 January 2013.

They were

January 3 2012
30,162 Trillion Particle timesteps overall (+193T over the past week)
Linac900Ext10tc2 is at 3.772285%, found by a BOINC Wrapper (yoyo@home) user, an increase of 0.000947% from last week.

MPTS

MPTS-wise, we’ve gone from 30,162 Trillion, to 38,934 Trillion – an increase of 8,772 Trillion. That works out to an average of 24.1Trillion a day. To put it in perspective, that’s simulating a particle at lightspeed for 72,495,867 km (45,046,843 miles) – half the distance from the Earth to the Sun, 4 light minutes – every single day.

It also shows the incredible increases in both computing power, and the project’s userbase, as almost one quarter of the work done in the last 12 years was done in 2012.

Lattices

No lattices that were running in at the start of 2012, were still active at the end of the year. While they all still accept data (as indeed do all past lattices) they’re no longer a primary focus.

February 10 saw the main change, as both Linax900Ext10c2 and Linac900Ext9X were closed.
Replacing them were Linac900Ext9Xc2 and Linac 900Ext7Xc2.

A month later (March 16), a new experiment, in the form of Linac900Ext6Xc2_nosample was started. Then in October (October 22) Linac900Ext7Xc2 was closed, and replaced with Linac900Ext8Xc2.

Major Events

In March, to coincide with the launch of the first _nosample lattice, the samplefiles were changed from being updated every 3 hours, to once a week. It was part of an experiment that has been ongoing all year on how to improve the optimizer. This ended in December, as the slower updates were found to not help the clustering approach much.

In May, the stats server went down, and was unavailable until early June. With most distributed projects, the loss of one of the central servers would cause significant problems, but because of the decentralized nature of the genetic algorithm, performance was unaffected.

August 31st, we hit 75 million simulations returned. It’s quite a milestone, and one we should have celebrated more, but it was conference time, and we just couldn’t.

Other Events

The ‘best design’ series of videos was brought up to date in May, while 7Xc2, which finished after that point, had its video released on the 12 December (after a 6 week wait for last minute results)

Meanwhile, the BOINC users are anonymous no more! From mid-March, all Yoyo@home wrapper users had their usernames parsed once more, meaning they were no-longer identified as ‘Yoyo@home Boinc wraper’. They can still be identified via the (BOINC) after their name, but they have a name again now. Once again, thanks to Yoyo for another year of supporting Muon1.

2013

2013 is already underway, and some of the upcoming things are more milestones, and more new, exciting lattices. There may even be some new client versions, and who new design paths – but who can tell!

In the meantime, keep crunching everyone, and don't forget to follow us on Facebook, Twitter or Google+
After a break of several months, the latest entry in the video stable comes from Linac900Ext7Xc2. Started in February, and closed in October, it had the third highest number of simulations returned in recent times.

The best design was 4.142452% by 1 27972 - A Yoyo@home Boinc Wrapper user.

Time for the first 2012 lattice, with one of the two that replaced Linac900Ext10tc2, and Linac900Ext9X. As has been common with the Ext series, it's about trying to force new discovery paths.

This lattice used a7-block system, and the 'c2' double-phase system.

What makes this lattice special is that in the 10 months since it started, it returned more simulations than almost any other, but managed almost 10% greater MPTS than ANY other lattice. This just shows how modern computers have come along.

While this lattice was officially closed in October, we gave it an extra 6 weeks, just to be sure there were no new results saved in a mega-flush, or otherwise delayed getting here.

The search space is in the 10249 range with 83 parameters. The lattice showed a two-stage growth pattern.

The X in the lattice name, replaces the t and also indicates extended time, but also marked it as lattice that required v4.45 at minimum.

With no stats box to constantly update it every hour, it's given me a stable dataset to work with for once. It does make a nice change to be able to see the stats and not have them change within an hour. So, while this break is ongoing, I thought about a breakdown of past lattices and their contributions.

It's going to just be a brief rundown at present, but I'll go into more detail soon So, here's the first graph.

This shows that, despite computers speeding up, most simulations are from older lattices. in fact, over 75% of results returned cover the first 14 lattices, which were run between March 2003, and early 2008.

However, if we look at it in terms of actual work (aka MPTS) then we get a different picture.

Here we can see that the spread of work is much more even, and the halfway point comes with LinacRemovable6c2, which launched less than 4 years ago. So while the majority of work over the last ten years has been in the last 4.

So the obvious conclusion is that newer lattices require more work. The one obvious standout is LinacExt10d2_axis, which was not a typical lattice, as it, and the related LinacExt10d2_zoom were special lattices, designed to test for noise, and used to develop the v4.45 client (which is why no 'best result' video was produced)

This lattice, the last to be 'finished' brings the series to an end, but will be revisited when more lattices close.

The best design was 2.506735% by TOMAZ

So we finally come to Linac900Ext9X, the lattice that replaced Linac900Ext6X. As has been common with the Ext series, it's about trying to force new discovery paths.

Instead of the 6 blocks of 6X, as the name suggests, it uses 9. While the final yield was not the most impressive, it was terminated when stuck at a much lower value - around 1.76% - and this score came in 3 weeks later, and was not developed further. This may change.

This was the last lattice to be completed at present, so it's the last in this series for a while.

The search space is in the 10309 range with 103 parameters. The lattice showed a two-stage growth pattern.

The X in the lattice name, replaces the t and also indicates extended time, but also marked it as lattice that required v4.45 at minimum.

This is the 'best' design as recreated in v4.45. The original simulation length as recorded was 68 minutes 07 seconds.
This lattice, released in July 2011, marked the last of the v4.44 compatable lattices, and the end of the line for the v4.44x clients that have been going since 2007.

The best design was 3.774999% by a Boinc Wrapper user (there is no way to tell who it is)

v4.45 had been out for some time, but not everyone had upgraded. This was especially true for the BOINC wrapper users, and to give them time to migrate, this last lattice was released. It also gave us one last chance to test out the issues of RF phase and optomisation, and allowing a for-like comparison with 10td2.

The change in optimisation pathway gave an improved result, scoring 0.642961% better over the 10td2 lattice.

The search space is in the 10354 range with 118 parameters. The lattice showed a two-stage growth pattern.

This is the 'best' design as recreated in v4.45. The original simulation length as recorded was 1 hour, 30 minutes 06 seconds.
Would the new client handle the RF phases better than the older client? Would the finer control of the phases make a difference? Only one way to find out.
The best design was 3.440846% by a Boinc Wrapper user (there is no way to tell who it is)

AThe release of this lattice (and next wee's 10tc2 lattice takes us right back to the beginning in some ways. This lattice came out just days before this 'best design' project was started, a little over 9 months ago.

The aim, as described at the time, was to try and avoid local maximums in 6Xc2 by resetting the RF phase back to it's finer grained, single-loop. This should lead to different design paths and perhaps, a better design.

The search space is in the 10198 range with 66 parameters. The lattice showed a single-stage growth pattern.

The X in the lattice name, replaces the t and also indicates extended time, but also marked it as lattice that required v4.45 at minimum.

This is the 'best' design as recreated in v4.45. The original simulation length as recorded was 57 minutes 05 seconds.
When 7tc2 took the worst of the d2 batch and inverted the phase, now we're taking the best, 10d2, and extending the max simulation time, giving 10td2.

The best design was 3.132038% by Team Norway's Steinrar

All the designs shown recently have been variations on a theme. Sometimes, the simulations get so complex and big that they just run out of time. This seemed to be a problem with some 10d2 simulations, so with 10td2, it's all the same, but with the maximum number of timesteps to be simulated raised from 200,000 (2 microseconds) to 350,000 (3.5 microseconds, or 0.0000035 of a second)

This did seem to give some improvement, although that could be due to a different optimization pathway. Regardless, the yield increased by 0.248797%.

This lattice also allowed people to continue to work using the older 4.44d client, meaning people could still contributte

The search space is in the 10309 range with 103 parameters. The lattice showed a two-stage growth pattern.

This is the 'best' design as recreated in v4.45. The original simulation length as recorded was 1 hour, 19 minutes 16 seconds.
This lattice, a redo of 6tc2, only accepts 4.45 results, rather than 4.44d, in an aim to make it more accurate.

The best design was 3.858423% by a Boinc Wrapper user (there is no way to tell who it is)

A big problem with v4.44 was that it was noisy, as we noted when v4.45 was released. So if we wanted to be sure that we had the best designs, we needed to start again with 6tc2, and hopefully the optimizer would take us to a better, or at least different results, and that without the noise giving higher results, another design path might be taken.

The results were different. A lower maximum yield, despite almost 20% more simulations, meant that the the increased accuracy was putting off clients finding their own solutions. It had an amazing start, however, as it was at 1.007752% just 4 days after release.

The search space is in the 10219 range with 73 parameters.

We increased the yield when we extended the time, and re-centered the phase range with Linac900Ext6tc2, but is that sort of improvement possible on the worst of the d2 lattices? Let's see...

As with last week, we noticed that a swap of the phase meant that it drastically improved yields. so would the worst of the Ext series to day, Linac900Ext7d2 benefit from that swap too? It wyould appear so.

While it was not as good as last weeks 6tc2 result, it did give a substantial improvement in yield, despite fewer simulations run (although double the MPTS were calculated).

The best design was 4.387044% by a Boinc Wrapper user (there is no way to tell who it is)

There was some concern over the RF field used. 'd2' lattices had been rather lacklustre in the past, and l900r6c2 had been one of the best results. Do adding the Ext touch, and letting it have a longer maximum simulation time (from 2µs to 3.5µ, hence the t in the lattice name) gives us the lattice.

It has been the best performing lattice since the move to the high target energy range with Linac88Mhz900MeV1, and only the 7th one to break 4% overall.

The search space is in the 10237 range with 79 parameters. The lattice showed a single-stage growth pattern.

Promising results from Linac900Removable6c2 have raised the possibility of taking things further.

The best design was 3.206615% by a Boinc Wrapper user (there was no way to tell who it wsa)

Sometimes, a good result has to be checked further. The results of linac900Removable6c2 have shown it to be the best of the Removable series (in fact, the best result since PhaseRotLinac6), making it worthy of further study.

instead of 6 blocks though, it takes a lead from the best Ext-series lattice at the time, Linac900Ext8d2, which had 8 blocks.

The search space is in the 10384 range with 128 parameters. The lattice showed a single-stage growth pattern.

This is the 'best' design as recreated in v4.45. The original simulation length as recorded was 56 minutes 02 seconds.
Now 9 blocks and the d2 RF phase setup.

The best design was 0.789847% by a Boinc Wrapper user (there is no way to tell who it is)

In this, the second of the Ext sequence of lattices (the current generation), the complexity level has been increased from 6 blocks to 9. Running concurrent simulations like this helps to prevent only one design path from being looked at as a whole. A true optimum design would result in a similar design in all such tests, since they have a common design theme.

It is, in many ways, an alternate form of rechecking.

The search space is in the 10363 range with 121 parameters. The lattice showed a single-stage growth pattern.

This is the 'best' design as recreated in v4.45. The original simulation length as recorded was 24 minutes 13 seconds.
These are experimentation with longer linacs and the RF phase (as more fully detailed here)

The best design was 1.432695% by the Dutch Power Cows' Universal Creations~Darkbartje

Now the focus has moved on from removable or shrunken sections, to the issue of the linac in general. The first one in this series is 6d2, which is a long-linac development of Linac900Removable6c2

As noted here, the major difference is the inverting of the RF phase (c rather than d)

The search space is in the 10189 range with 63 parameters. The lattice showed a single-stage growth pattern.
That’s because new lattices have been introduced. Also, the v4.44d client has also been finally put to rest. There will be no more lattices that allow it to be used, so after almost a year, the jitter-free 4.45 will finally be the ‘required’ client.

With the retirement of both Linac900Ext10tc2 and Linac900Ext9X we’re moving on to Linac900Ext7Xc2 and Linac900Ext9Xc2. Both are development improvements of previous lattices, and attempt to work on phase handling, as well as investigate new designs without being side-tracked by jitter.

Just how big a problem jitter (the random noise that can mean almost identical designs can have a significantly different result, and add an element of fuzziness) can be shown in this graph from the Linac900Ext10d2_zoom lattice trial tested in late 2010.

How that impacts on the yield and it’s design path is better illustrated by the following graph, showing yield against mpts for various client versions. As you can see, the rightmost edge is all 4.44d clients, meaning the 4.45 users are trying to beat a design that may be inferior.

As to the new lattices themselves, they are derivatives. The final 4 (or sometimes 5) characters are the key to the differences. In this case, it’s 7Xc2 and 9Xc2. These can be broken down as follows:

The 7 and 9 represent the number of blocks in the design.

X shows that it’s got an extended maximum simulated time, just as the earlier “t” did. However, X *also* means that it requires 4.45 or later.

The c2 refers to the method for generating the RF phase. It is in fact the inverse wave of the d2 attribute. Without either, it’s a single wave that starts with the c2 designs. However, as the 2 indicates, it contains TWO waves, rather than one.

RF Phase genome value in lattice design
Credit S. Brooks

The two waves are for cycling. With only a single wave, the client sometimes has problems going from 999 (one end of the wave) to 000 (the other end), going to two waves enabled this to be less of a problem. However, it’s important to point out that c2 and d2 variants describe what would otherwise be IDENTICAL designs in different ways. The massive yield difference between 10td2 (3.774999%) and 10tc2 (2.885679%) point to optimizer failures.

Meanwhile, we’ll see how well these new lattices do. Already they’ve gone positive, and now that there’s clarity on the RF phase factor, we can expect things to be performing better than ever.
The problem with such huge search-spaces, is that desirable targets are relatively small, and can be missed. By reducing complexity, we can make them more likely to be found.

The best design was 3.068246% by a Boinc Wrapper user (there is no way to tell who it is)

As mentioned last week, there are two schools of thought for improving a design. One is to add resolution, ot see if a design can be further refined, or if details allow a design that's already known to suddenly 'click'. That was the idea behind last weeks lattice.

The other is to simplify, and start again, meaning there's a better chance of finding a 'good design', by reducing the number of possibilities. It may produce a different design that could be later optimised by other lattice methods through manual injection.

The search space is in the 10189 range with 63 parameters. The lattice showed a three-stage growth pattern, which is unusual.

This is the 'best' design as recreated in v4.45. The original simulation length as recorded was 50 minutes 17 seconds.
Yet they've all been a bit simple in the design phase, so it's time we added another layer of complexity.

The best design was 3.670822% by a Boinc Wrapper user (there is no way to tell who it is)

Taking a design that seems to have worked well (Linac900removable6) and trying to improve it is not easy. There are two schools of thought. One is to reduce the test area, by simplifying, to ensure a better coverage (that will be covered next week).

The other is to increase the complexity to allow better resolution and allow designs which will allow more flexibility in optimizing designs. This is the method chosen here. Instead of the 6 sections, it's been split into 12.

The search space is in the 10606 range with 202 parameters. The lattice showed a two-stage growth pattern.

This is the 'best' design as recreated in v4.45. The original simulation length as recorded was 50 minutes 50 seconds.
In order to make sure we don't leave any stone unturned, we should turn an eye to that, and so we have Linac900Removable6c2

The best design was 3.891455% by a Boinc Wrapper user (there is no way to tell who it is)

There has been a chance to change everything in recent designs except for one thing; the phase rotation. In theory the pre-programmed one should work well, there is a chance for alternate phase rotations to give a better yield. Here it can be offset by up to 720 degrees.

There was also no seeding done of this design, to let it proceed independently, without letting it be guided by past designs. Since the end result is 0.206792 higher than Linac900Removable6, with the only difference being the phase rotation, it seemed to be a good cal.

The search space is in the 10342 range with 114 parameters. The lattice showed a two-stage growth pattern.

This is the 'best' design as recreated in v4.45. The original simulation length as recorded was 58 minutes 13 seconds.
Now let's do that with Linac88MHz900MeV6

The best design was 3.684663% by the Dutch Power Cows's NoizyCows~Bjorga

Last week's Linc900Removable1 was a development of Linac88MHz900MeV1 that allowed the bits to be shortened or even eliminated. The next idea would be to apply the same reasoning to the alternate design thread, Linac88MHz900MeV6

This lattice is, yet again, a refinement lattice, taking Linac88MHz900MeV6 and tweaking it. The initial 10 solenoids in the design can not only have a zero gap not (as last week) but can be eliminated entirely.

The search space is in the 10336 range with 112 parameters. The lattice showed a two-stage growth pattern.

This is the 'best' design as recreated in v4.45. The original simulation length as recorded was 54 minutes 13 seconds.
If you let the components themselves be shrunk to nothingness, you get Linac900Romovable1

The best design was 2.922755% by the Dutch Power Cows's Team ColdFusion~SandStar
Last week's Linc900NoGaps1 was a development of Linac88MHz900MeV1 that allowed the space between bits to be shortened or even eliminated. The next idea would be to apply the same reasoning to the components themselves.

This lattice is, yet again, a refinement lattice, taking Linac88MHz900MeV1 and tweaking it. The initial 10 solenoids in the design can not only have a zero gap not (as last week) but can be eliminated entirely.

The search space is in the 10123 range with 41 parameters. The lattice showed a single-stage growth pattern.

This is the 'best' design as recreated in v4.45. The original simulation length as recorded was 37 minutes 06 seconds.
It’s had a massive explosion in processing power, and reached a few milestones. Meanwhile we’ve closed out the two lattices that were running at the beginning of the year, started and finished 4 more and have 2 open and active.

It’s been a busy year, all in all.

First of all, the changes. We started this blog, and a twitter feed. I felt (with Stephen’s support) that it would be one of the better ways to get some information about the nuts and bolts of the project, in a more understandable style. However, since it wasn’t going to be Stephen doing it, it really couldn’t go on the Muon1 site, not at first, so this ‘un’official blog was born. Along with it came the twitter feed, which helped with presence. Both are run by me, although Stephen has access if needed (like something seriously wrong gets posted)

Early in the year, a new client version was released. While it wasn’t any quicker, it was consistently more accurate, and had less random noise in the results, which had led to some unusual results on occasions. I think this image best describes the difference, when v4.44d and v4.45 are used on exactly the same simulations.

v4.44d is the darker, v4.45 is the lighter
White is yield (reds are 5x runs), blue is mpts

The other advantage of v4.45 was the revamp of the graphical mode, which made it a bit faster on computers, and made it easier to record videos. This enabled us to release a video showing the merits of the visual client, including all the handy points that most people just don’t see.

Later in the year, I gave a talk at Dragon*Con, which covered the basics of the project, and showed its aims, and goals, as well as some of the science behind it. This was reasonably well received.

There was also a project started in the summer, to cover all the past lattices. Giving a brief overview, some details about the work done on the lattice, as well as who got the best result, it also included a video of that design. It started in mid-July with SolenoidsOnly, and is currently scheduled to finish sometime in May 2012. It doesn’t include the high-resolution scan projects (Linac900Ext10d2_axial3, and Linac900Ext10d2_zoom) used to determine client noise, however, since they were not open for the general userbase, being a brute-force scan of a very limited design area.

Of course, the biggest story of the year has been with the sheer amount of work done. These are covered by the stats published weekly, on a Tuesday (with a few gaps at the start of the year), on the twitter feed, the facebook page and on google+. Coincidentally, stats were released on December 27th in both 2010 and 2011 and that lets us get a nice overview of the stats for the year.

21,885 Trillion Particle timesteps overall
27 December 2011 at 18:43

There is just one major thing to note. In almost exactly 1 year, 8,084 Trillion particle timesteps were calculated. That’s 27% of all work done to that point had been done in the previous year. And 33% of work had been done over the previous 18 months.

This meant that in June we hit the 25 Quadrillion (or Million-Billion) particle-timestep mark, but the real eye-opener was when, just over 6 months later, we hit the 30 quadrillion mark. It took 9 years to do 20, another11 months to get to 25 and just 6 more months to get to 30, and it's looking like 35 won't take too long either.

The 70-Million results milestone was also reached, in early November, and now, two months later we're done another million more.

There’s no question that Muon1 is growing, and it looks like it’s got a bright future ahead of it.K`Tetchhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12923661185364709506noreply@blogger.com0
